Route 9: From Hoyo de Manzanares to Moralzarzal through the Hoyo Mountains

Enjoy unique landscapes, Mediterranean flora and unique cork oak forests on a route that connects two charming mountain villages.

This route runs along a cattle track for much of the route, allowing you to enjoy the Mediterranean scrub. Special mention should be made of the cork oak groves in the Sierra de Hoyo (the highest in the whole of the Iberian Peninsula). Holm oaks, junipers, rockroses, rosemary and thyme accompany us along a route that allows us to enjoy the Sierra de Hoyo and to contemplate, once we have crossed it, the high peaks and mountain ranges of the Sierra de Guadarrama.

The tapestries of rockrose in bloom, and the great variety of wild flowers will delight our sight and smell in spring. The route starts in the Plaza Mayor of Hoyo de Manzanares, where we take the Avenida de la Paloma to the west, at the end of this avenue, at the fork, we take the street Camino de Villalba, to the right, in front of the Plaza de Toros and between the urbanisations of La Orotava and Los Picazos.

After going up the whole street, we find a dirt road. Leaving the water tank of the Canal de Isabel II on the right, we are now in the middle of a cattle track, on the Camino de Villalba. We continue straight on until we reach a crossroads where we turn slightly uphill to the right, at the next branch we turn left going down stony ground; we continue without leaving the main path, always to the right, until we reach a very marked crossroads where we turn right again, slightly uphill.

The path is comfortable and well-defined and allows us to enjoy the granite shapes of the Sierra de Hoyo de Manzanares and its valleys. Ash trees, poplars, acacias, wild rose bushes and blackberries border some of the seasonal streams that we leave behind us. When the track forks, take the path to the left until the next fork where you turn right and continue along the main path until you reach a sort of hill where you take the path to the right. Our sight and our spirit will enjoy, in the background, the landscapes of the Sierra de Guadarrama.

We will have left the path we were on, which continued to the left on a stony descent next to a stone wall. We continue on until we reach a water tank on the right, where we turn left on a steep slope towards the Urb. Bellas Vistas, where we go down Calle de la Perdiz, continue along Avenida del Águila and Paseo del Cisne, where we reach a roundabout and take Calle Federica Montseny towards Camino del Moral. Moralzarzal is close by, and the white dome of its covered bullring can be seen in the background.

We do not leave the road, on both sides there are cattle farms, enclosed by stone fences that delimit the pastures; we also leave a small pine forest on our right. We continue straight on, the path runs slightly to the right, and then skirts a housing estate on the left; we reach the crossroads with an asphalted road which we take to the left, going slightly downhill, where after crossing the M-608 road at the zebra crossing, we continue straight on until we reach the car park of the Moralzarzal bullring, the end of our route.
