Route 20: From Puerto de Navacerrada to Cercedilla via the Caminos Shcmid and the Fuenfría

Enjoy a scenic route through mountains, pine trees and historic trails, ideal for nature lovers and hikers.

The excursion starts at the Puerto de Navacerrada, and it is a highly recommended option to reach it from Cercedilla (where you can leave your vehicle) on the small rack railway. Once at the pass, head towards the Escaparate ski slope and take the Schmid path, which heads west towards the Puerto de la Fuenfría, through the shady area of the Siete Picos. The path, which runs through a pine forest, is easy to follow (even in snow) as there are signs on the trees. Just keep an eye out for the only fork in the path (about 50' after the start of the walk) and take the path to the right (a signpost indicates "Senda de los Cospes"), which leads in about 30' to the Puerto de la Fuenfría. From this mountain pass you have to descend southwards along the Roman road, easily identifiable, until you reach the chalet of Club Peñalara, next to the meadow of Los Corralillos, where you join the asphalted road to the town of Cercedilla. From La Fuenfría to Cercedilla it can take, in normal conditions, 1h 40'. In total, 3 hours of walking without any important rests or stops.
