Route 4: Ascent of La Najarra from Miraflores de la Sierra

Enjoy breathtaking views, diverse wildlife and a walk through pine trees and meadows in a unique and revitalising natural experience.

The route starts at the Fuente del Cura recreational area. After crossing the bridge that crosses the Miraflores river, on the right hand side, a forest path leads off in a north-westerly direction, which we take until we reach the Miraflores reservoir after a little over 1,700m. Once there, just before reaching the gate that leads to the reservoir, a path starts on our left that takes us to the upper part of the reservoir.

We continue uphill along the path following the signs, crossing a meadow and then entering the oak wood until we come across a path that crosses in a north-south direction, a little before the Llanos de la Matanza meadow. From this point and parallel to the stream that flows down from the pine forest, we start to climb a steep but short slope of about 400 m until we reach the edge of the pine forest and cross the Morcuera range.

We continue the climb into the pine forest to reach the Morcuera forest track a little further up, next to one of the 7 large cliffs that make up the formation known as "Siete calles" on this slope, which is nothing more than large accumulations of fragmented gneiss from the upper parts of La Najarra. After walking along this track, after a few metres we take the path on our left that will take us through the pine forest to the Puerto de la Morcuera at an altitude of 1,796 m and after 5300 m from the start.

After overcoming the wooden barrier to the left of the pass, close to the boundary fence, we climb a few metres and find ourselves on the north ridge of La Najarra, which among rocky outcrops, broom and imposing views will take us to the geodesic located on the rope (2,105 m). Here the ascent ends, retracing our steps in two hours we will return to the start of the route.

This excursion is a good opportunity to observe birds representative of the different ecosystems and landscapes along the route.
