Visigothic site of El Rebollar (El Boalo): hermitage, necropolis and traces of rural life next to the Cañada Real Segoviana

The Visigothic traces in the Sierra de Guadarrama tell us of a past of simple people who found in this mountain range a welcoming, productive and safe place to live.

In the lands of El Boalo, Cerceda and Mataelpino, it is fortunate that the site of El Rebollar has been saved from the necessary urban development of the sierra, and today it allows us to recover and interpret the traces of the daily life of this interesting and little known village.

The Christian hermitage that was superimposed on and took advantage of the original Visigothic construction covered it and protected the subsoil and the burial sites. The tranquillity of centuries underground has kept for archaeologists and for all of us objects, customs and rituals that bring us a little closer to its inhabitants, farmers and stockbreeders sheltered by the grandeur of the mountains, now a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The outlines of the initial church and cemetery give us a very accurate idea of the religious habits and the vision of the world of those ancestors, which are embellished by their strategic location on a hill next to the Cañada Real Segoviana, an important communication route of the time that has remained in use to the present day.

This situation allows us to enjoy the landscape that surrounds the site of El Rebollar from the Cuenca Alta del Manzanares Regional Park and the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park.
