Route 18: Enjoying the dehesa of Los Molinos

A route between oaks and holm oaks offers spectacular views, open meadows and the tranquillity of nature, ideal for disconnecting and enjoying.

This route runs between oak, ash and holm oak trees, with gentle slopes and the silhouette of the Sierra mountains always present. It starts from the hermitage of San José, following the Cañada Real de las Merinas in a north-westerly direction. The path, wide at first, leaves several Canal de Isabel II reservoirs on the left and narrows as it passes next to one of them, before widening again after crossing the Peñota stream. About 3 km from the start, after fording a small stream, you reach an open meadow with no trees, from which you can see La Peñota on the right and, very close by, the railway line. At this point, leave the ravine and take a path that descends southwards, becoming less and less steep. After about 800 metres, this path leads perpendicularly onto another path; turn left and you pass a farm, and half a kilometre further on it crosses another oblique path, along which you continue towards the southwest. After 100 metres you come to a fork and take the path to the right, following the direction indicated by a sign for an equestrian centre. After crossing a large meadow, you join another path, which you take to the left. From here, you will see buildings for horses on the adjoining estates, and 800 metres further on you reach a meadow with scattered trees, where you will find the hermitage of the Virgen del Espino (Virgin of the Hawthorn). Near it, at the edge of the path, there is a fountain (with non-drinking water) and, a little further on, a drinking trough. Continuing along the route, 700 metres further on there is a gate on the right, from where you take a cattle track known as the cordel del Toril to return to Los Molinos. This track crosses beautiful pastures and, after crossing another gate some 200 metres further on, you leave the estate of the convent of the Hermanitas de los Pobres on your left. From there, the path is asphalted and leads to the first houses in the village. The route ends by returning to the starting point along the Paseo de los Transeúntes, which skirts the town centre and connects again with the gully where the route began.
